Ahh the wood pallet. So simple in it’s design, yet filled with so many possibilities. Wooden pallets have been around for use in retail environments for lifting large amounts of inventory, but lately there has been an increased interest from people that want to reuse the wood pallet to create upcycled furniture.
One might think with such a rustic looking object, the furniture would also turn out to be unpolished as well. That is far from the truth. Beautiful wood pallet furniture pieces can be made depending on the carpentry skills, the tools on hand, the blueprints available and the imagination level of the creator.
A few tips to remember when creating your custom made wood pallet furniture:
#1 Get ideas from the web and DIY to spark your own imagination. You may already have something in mind about what you want to build, but keep an open mind to others possibilities. There are many projects that have been made that you might have thought were possible with wood pallets.
#2 Have a blueprint or a plan. It’s one thing to have an idea but quite another to turn that idea into reality. Make sure you have a blueprint to refer to and read it FIRST before making any cuts.
#3 Hire a professional if you don’t have the skills or the time. The whole idea behind using a wood pallet for furniture is to possibly save money on furniture by doing it yourself. But even if you hire a carpenter you would still be saving money on a custom piece by providing the materials. Check out a resource like craigslist.org to look for local carpenters with reasonable fees

The Night Sky.
People have been starring at the sky for ages. They studied it in the field of astronomy to understand how stars are made. They follow it in the field of astrology as a guide for life. They have written about it in poetry and painted it on canvases. It has also just been enjoyed simply, while lying on a field of grass.
If you wanted to bring a little of that sense of wonder back into your own home, it can be done with a moon and stars bedroom theme. This theme is perfect for a child’s bedroom, but it can also be adjusted to an adult’s bedroom.
The most important things to consider when creating a moon and stars bedroom are : the colors, the form and the lighting. All of these factors will determine the overall feel of the room.
For the colors of a moon and stars bedroom its’s best to stick with darker neutral colors such as gray and black, various shades of blue and white as the contrasting color. Think of space stations and technical gadgets. Their colors are often gray or blue.
The second thing to consider is form. This theme is best suited for modern/ contemporary furniture with clean lines and minimal details. The focus should be on the walls and ceilings, not the furniture.
That brings us to the lighting. Here’s where the theme can bring in the most fun elements. Lamps and fiber optic lights can be installed on the ceiling. Or use a starlight projector that can be installed on a bedside table or dresser as a nightlight.
Murals can be painted with glow in the dark paints or wall decals of the moon can easily be applied to walls or furniture. Even chalk board paint can be painted on one wall and the constellations can be drawn on or changed as the night sky changes.
You can even get the kids involved by letting them help you make their own room decorations. Here’s a fun video of DIY stars in a jar:
Create a few sweet dreams with theses starry sky ideas:
During the summer months, many people start thinking about getting away for a summer vacation. Often times the very thought of visiting some beautiful beach filled with white sand and deep blue waters brings a smile across my face. The Greek Islands have been a favorite dream vacation of mine and I often look for ways to bring the islands into my home.
When I think of the Greek Islands and of the wonderful resort hotels there, the first thing that comes to mind is the chic white furniture that is featured in lobbies and hotel bedrooms. The second thing I think of is the beautiful incorporation of the deep sea blue, often called Mediterranean blue, that contrasts strikingly against the white background. The mosaics used in the bathrooms tiles and kitchen floors remind the visitor of the ancient history contained on the island. These are the types of decoration that have stood the test of time and will still look beautiful even in the modern day home.
In the month of July, many Americans are celebrating Independence Day on July 4th. Everywhere people are putting up decorations in the main colors of red, white and blue which happen to be the colors found in the American flag. Even seeing these colors makes many think of things related to summer, barbecues and children with Popsicle covered mouths.
These colors are also very patriotic. It makes you grateful for the family you have and the brave men and women that sacrificed for freedom. You may want to celebrate by using the classic color combination with a red, white and blue kitchen update. Since the kitchen is the heart of the home, it seems to be the perfect spot to highlight colors that reflect love of home, family and country.
A good bucket of fire engine red paint is the perfect base for your red, white and blue kitchen. Red is an energizing color and also stimulating to the appetite. Expect hunger mouths eager to be fed when you paint this color on your walls!
A medium tone country blue is also a classic color for the walls or cabinetry. It lends more to a farmhouse look and will look great with more rustic floors and appliances.
Accessories accentuate the theme depending on the mood you want to covey. A Red Kitchen Aid mixer and red canisters can give the kitchen a retro 1950’s feel. While a chalkboard painted panel and a wooden pallet kitchen table carry on the farm-to-table theme. Fabrics such as gingham and bandana print help to round out the look.
Since summer is well upon us, many people start thinking of giving their living quarters a refreshing uplift with color. One of the hottest colors for the summer is coral. The color is bright and inviting making it a great pick to freshen up your bedroom. Here we’ve compiled a few of the best coral bedroom ideas on the the web.
A store like Home Depot makes it easy by not only supplying numerous shades of coral paint colors to chose from, but also giving selections of complementary colors to enhance the overall look of the room.
If painting the walls is too inconvenient, changing the furniture might be a better way to go. You can repaint old used furniture already available in your house, buy used furniture at a yard sale or visit IKEA and repaint a basic furniture piece. You get to use your creative and put your artistic skills to good use. Giving any old used piece a coat of paint will give it new life.
Important tip: If repainting a used piece of furniture, make sure to properly sand the item and apply a primer before painting.
If painting is way too messy a job, then buying coral accessories is the best way to go. Look for throws, pillows and lamps that are coral colored. Also the actual coral is from the sea, so anything that is related to beaches and seaside living would automatically work well with the theme. Starfish, seahorses and conch shells work well with this color palette.Image found at thelennoxx.comtheme.
